Our History
From the Homeland to Oklahoma
The Alabama Quassarte Tribal Town traces its origins to the Alabama tribe and Quassarte tribe, indigenous peoples who inhabited the southeastern United States for thousands of years. Our ancestors were part of the Creek Confederacy, a sophisticated alliance of towns that governed the region through diplomacy, trade, and shared cultural values.
In the 1830s, the United States government forcibly removed the Muscogee (Creek) people from their ancestral homelands in present-day Alabama and Georgia along what became known as the Trail of Tears. Thousands perished during the brutal journey westward. Those who survived resettled in Indian Territory — what is now the state of Oklahoma — where they rebuilt their communities, governments, and way of life.
The Alabama Quassarte Tribal Town was formally organized and received federal recognition, reestablishing our government and affirming our sovereignty as a distinct tribal nation. Our tribal constitution, adopted in 1939, established the framework for self-governance that guides us to this day.

The Alabama Quassarte Tribal Town is a federally recognized sovereign nation. Our sovereignty — the inherent right to self-govern — predates the United States and is affirmed through treaties, federal law, and our own constitution. We exercise our sovereignty through our elected government, tribal laws, and the programs and services we provide to our members.
